So many articles on questions to ask your wedding photographer include “how many photographs will I receive?” This is a great question to ask, but the thing people rarely mention is that more doesn’t mean better.
Early in my corporate career, a phrase that I heard time and time again was “sorry for the long email, I didn’t have time to write you a short one” and this very much applies to your wedding gallery too. Over the course of your wedding day, my team and I will usually take between 4000 and 6000 images. For multi-day weddings, this number can easily surpass 10,000.
There are moments during a wedding day where I press the shutter once to capture the image I have in mind, but there are other moments where at the time it isn’t clear which fraction of a second will yield the perfect image – confetti and your first kiss being prime examples. In these moments, I capture multiple images in quick succession to ensure the perfect moment is captured.
My approach is all about capturing authentic, fleeting moments, not pre-designed poses, and those beautiful moments only last for a fraction of a second, so capturing more than one photograph of moments during your wedding portraits is so important to ensure that your gallery includes those magical moments!
After your wedding, I then go through every image and carefully select every photograph I think you’ll love. Curating your gallery takes time, but is so important. It means that when you receive your gallery, it is a curated collection of images that cohesively tell the story of your wedding – less is more.
If I were to simply send you every image, you would be faced with the huge task of going through yourself and finding those that are perfect. The large gallery would be quick to produce because I would be leaving the hard work to you.
Instead (within reason) less is more when it comes to producing your gallery, ensuring that the only thing for you to do is to enjoy reliving your wedding. Typical final galleries for single day weddings include between 800 and 1300 photographs, including every image I think you will love.
However, curating this gallery isn’t the final step in my process. When preparing your gallery, there are always a handful of images which jump off the screen as capturing something more than just the story of your wedding, and instead capture the emotion. Every gallery includes these first, so that you’re welcomed into your final gallery by these select moments, and you will also receive a copy of these in print – I know from personal experience that there’s something very special about holding your wedding photographs, so love to share this with every couple who trusts me to capture their wedding!
